Meta Reality Labs Research
via Insight Global
Start Date: March 2021 End Date: August 2022
Collected, annotated, and evaluated user data to support photorealistic avatar generation in the “Metaverse” using virtual reality headsets & proprietary capture systems. I signed a fat stack of NDAs, so I can’t say much about study designs or content. I can say that I learned a lot by engaging with Agile PM practices at the lab, and approached each project by centering data quality while optimizing participant experiences.
Primary Study
Conducted over 50 8-hour data collection sessions for general user studies, utilizing virtual reality headsets, a medical-grade intra-oral scanner, and proprietary image capture systems (Mugsy, pictured above) to conduct extensive user interviews, facial acuity tests, and structural scans.
Worked closely with cross-functional engineering and research study teams to ensure proper equipment setup.
Managed participant interactions, providing instruction and debriefing post-study to gather qualitative feedback.
Operated the research equipment, including the capture dome control system and calibration robot.
Followed and contributed to evolving research scripts based on participant feedback, collecting key metrics to optimize the capture process.
Identified and reported bugs, addressed technical issues during data collection, and collaborated with technical support teams to debug post-study and develop troubleshooting protocols.
Leveraged UX Research & Design principles to support research projects and development activities, streamline data collection documentation, and draft standard operating procedures.
Accurately annotated and labeled data and provided feedback to optimize annotation guidelines
Pilot Studies
Designed and implemented two pilot user studies in collaboration with an adjacent research team to address data collection limitations identified through UX Research conducted on the primary study design.
In-Virtual Reality Quality Evaluation
Reviewed photorealistic avatars in Virtual Reality environments with a partner, adhering to evolving evaluation criteria to annotate data via proprietary software.
Collaborated with team members to update scoring criteria and develop a strong rapport to effectively produce KAPPA scores for the avatars.
User Experience Research & Strategy
UX Content & Strategy: Participant Feedback Survey(s), Technician Feedback Survey(s)
Streamlined Documentation: Capture Notes Optimization, Primary Quality Evaluation Standard Operating Procedure, In-VR Quality Evaluation Standard Operating Procedure, Headset Capture Standard Operating Procedure
Led Workgroups: User Experience, Team-Building
Data Diversity Program (DDP): With two other employees of color, I spearheaded an initiative to collect data from a larger variety of participants. The DDP drew in stakeholders from multiple labs, and its influence spanned across multiple projects supporting the Primary Study. I was nominated by my peers to represent our initiative and presented relevant progress updates to the entire Meta Reality Lab.
