Mobile Personal Training & Fitness Application
Goal
Assess the ease with which personal trainers (primary users) can create and schedule workouts for clients (end users). Reports furnished upon request.
Planning & Recruitment
By collaborating with stakeholders and reviewing the app, a 30-hour study scope was finalized. Then, a Research Plan and relevant materials were created, e.g. System Usability Scale Survey. Recruiting users from the personal trainer’s demographic required compensation at or slightly above their average hourly market wage ($50-100/hour).
Progress was systematically reported to stakeholders via Slack, email, Loom, and weekly syncs. The methodology for the 4 primary user studies conducted was the same, with scopes of study varying to dissect different pages of the application.
Key Findings:
- Client profile information and knowledge of the end-user experience were insufficient for primary users.
- The information architecture of the app was problematic for users, i.e. categorization and filtering of Exercises.
- Throughout the user interface, task closure failed to be facilitated at crucial points in the user journey.
- UX copy/content throughout the interface, especially the Exercise List and Performance Assessment pages, is not meeting users’ needs/expectations.

Data Analysis & Outcomes
- Thematic Categorization of Feedback: Session recordings, quantitative survey data, and Moderator notes were uploaded to the UXR platform Condens. Then, videos were transcribed and all data was tagged/grouped by theme to isolate trends in user feedback.
- Research Insights & Recommendations: Insights revealed by trends in user data, the evidence that supports them (e.g. video clips), and recommendations to mitigate users’ pain points were compiled into a Research Report and summarized with a Case Study Slide Deck. A redacted version is linked above.
- Continued Engagement: The actionable findings reported prompted the product team to adjust product plans, opting to pursue additional paths of discovery and further research to inform development efforts. Extended usability testing was facilitated by Zeila Hobson from Q4 of 2022 to Q1 of 2024.
