Case Study: HR Platform UX Focus Groups

HR Platform UX Focus Groups

Goal

Collect and analyze qualitative data regarding onboarding to and engaging with the client’s human resources browser application.

Planning & Recruitment

15 users were recruited by the client and incentivized them with $50 Amazon E-Gift Cards for their participation in the hour-long testing sessions.

Research questions were produced via an independent review of the platform and collaboration with stakeholders. These primary questions guided the Moderator’s brainstorming of 30 focus group questions, which were then refined and finalized during a sync with stakeholders to produce 21 questions for users.

The focus group questions and relevant screenshots were embedded into the facilitation slide deck. Users participated via Zoom, answering questions as the Moderator presented them. Throughout the session, the Moderator asked open-ended questions about the user interface and product offering to nurture conversation among users via chat and verbal responses. The Moderator kept participant rambling to a minimum but encouraged users to expand on their relevant points and experiences.

Data Analysis & Outcomes

A research report was generated via Condens. Stakeholders were thrilled with the presentation and voiced commitment to iterating the product design based on the Moderator’s recommendations. They scheduled a follow-up for Q4 of 2023 to coincide with the launch of the updated design.

Key Findings:

Users experienced a variety of pain points when adopting the product and engaging with it’s features and user interface:

  • Users require, tailored, comprehensive onboarding materials and instructional messages throughout the user interface.
  • Users desire product integrations to streamline notifications from the browser application.
  • Users desire diversified notification copy that creates a sense of urgency, scarcity, and/or competition.
  • Users positively responded to the notion of gamifying their user experience if the rewards are tangible.
  • Users overlook a key page of the browser application, implying it’s contents should be relocated or better highlighted to facilitate users’ interactions with it.
